Netflix Recommender

Nearest Neighbours

By using a simple unsupervised learner a moderate recommender can be created to suggest movies and series. The nearest neighbour algorithm calculates the distance between points and assumes that similar shows will be close to each other. The features of the movies/series are scaled to improve the model's ability to learn. Based on the chosen show the 5 closest shows are shown with their trailer.

Research Project: Deer on the road

The Zeeweg (Zandvoort, N200) is a well-known road in the Netherlands, leading to a formula 1 track and beach. However, the road also crosses through a national park and the habitat of deer. Since 2014 there have been 172 deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) registered on the road. Since the collisions cause a lot of trouble I investigated the problem for the province. Here are some key findings and answers to questions that I receive often.

The province of North-Holland registered 734 deer collisions from 2014 till 2020.

From 2014 till 2020 there have been 172 collisions on and around the Zeeweg. Every red dot represents a collision.

On a year to year basis, the collisions have been relatively stable, with a spike in 2019. It's still unclear for me and the province what happened in 2019.

We can clearly see a seasonal U-form pattern, whereby the most collisions happen in the winter months and the least in the summer. This pattern resembles the activity of deer, as it is more difficult for them to find food in the winter.

In order to reduce the collision the province has placed fences along the road, nevertheless, these seem to have little effect.

In 2017 the province built an eco passage to help animals cross the road. However, it only seems to have a reducing effect in a range of 603 meters.

Before the eco passage was built there were 4 hotspots (numbered in the image).

After building the eco passage (black line in the image), the collisions were more spread out over the road segments with 2 hotspots (numbered in the image). Also, the collisions reduced relatively by 25% taking into account the growing deer population.

Covid-19 or not, the amount of vehicles on the Zeeweg hasn't really changed surprisingly.
